Facebook takes steps to address privacy concerns

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook has taken steps in recent days to address more worries about privacy, warning employers not to ask prospective employees for their passwords and trying to clarify its user “rights and responsibilities” policies.

But the latter effort backfired when tens of thousands of users, mostly in Germany, misunderstood the clarifications and blasted the company, even though nothing substantive had changed. Their discontent showed that, no matter what Facebook does, privacy concerns are still the biggest threat to users’ trust and to its growth.

“There is such an incredible level of scrutiny now about anything any company does about privacy,” said Jules Polonetsky, director of the Future of Privacy Forum, an industry-backed think tank in Washington. “We are treating every single thing that touches privacy as a five-alarm fire. The risk of all these five-alarm level outbursts is that people will become inured about privacy and miss real privacy issues because of crying wolf when nothing is actually going on.”

Users’ willingness to share information is a key part of Facebook’s business. The site makes the bulk of its money from ads that target users based on their personal information. Last year, the company earned a profit of $668 million and booked $3.7 billion of revenue, and it’s preparing for an initial public offering later this spring that could be valued at as much as $100 billion.

Privacy issues have dogged Facebook for years. It settled with the Federal Trade Commission in November over allegations that it misled users about the handling of their personal information. Google Inc., a big rival, agreed to a similar settlement eight months earlier.

The latest ruckus happened when more than 30,000 German users posted that they were rejecting the company’s proposed changes to its governing documents. But the changes amounted to nuanced revisions and clarifications of long-standing policies ? not a major overhaul.

The company, for instance, replaced the word “profile” with “timeline,” since Facebook users now have a different type of profile. Facebook also changed “hateful” to “hate speech” in its description of prohibited content.

Still, users who read the documents for the first time noticed some things that alarmed them. For example, the document replaced the words “privacy policy” with “data-use policy,” seemingly taking privacy out of the picture.

Facebook has been calling it a data-use policy since September, preferring to be more straightforward about its actual purpose. But the company makes so many subtle changes that it’s easy to lose track.

“It’s clear that some people fundamentally misunderstand our proposed changes. Our data-use policy governs how we use and collect data. That document is not changing at this time,” Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said. “That’s why we have this unique and transparent process, though ? so have an opportunity to clarify confusion and respond to user concerns. We look forward to doing so in the coming weeks.”

Another worrisome discovery might have been the fact that applications used by your Facebook friends can gain access to your data on Facebook, even if you do not use the apps yourself. That’s true, but it’s been true since at least 2007 and well-documented elsewhere on the site.

The attention focused on Facebook’s largely cosmetic changes reflect just how closely people watch the company.

“If they reposted the same privacy policy they had, everyone would be jumping up and down,” said Polonetsky, a former chief privacy officer at AOL.

Sarah Downey, senior privacy strategist at an online privacy software provider called Abine, was among those criticizing Facebook this week. She said the company is being more straightforward about its business model and what it does by clarifying its documents. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s heading in the right direction.

“What we once thought of as a social network has really become an advertising network,” she said.

On Friday, it was Facebook itself that raised alarms about privacy, warning employers not to ask job applicants for their passwords to the site so they can poke around on their profiles. The company threatened legal action against applications that violate its long-standing policy against sharing passwords.

The company action came after The Associated Press documented cases of job applicants who were asked, at the interview table, to reveal their Facebook passwords so their prospective employers can check their online profiles.

A Facebook executive cautioned that if an employer discovers that a job applicant is a member of a protected group, the employer may be vulnerable to claims of discrimination if it doesn’t hire that person.

“As a user, you shouldn’t be forced to share your private information and communications just to get a job,” Erin Egan, Facebook’s chief privacy officer of policy, wrote in a post. “And as the friend of a user, you shouldn’t have to worry that your private information or communications will be revealed to someone you don’t know and didn’t intend to share with just because that user is looking for a job.”

The post sparked comments from Facebook users, many of them thankful. But the number totaled only 108 ? a sign that when it comes to online privacy, it’s far easier to stir anger than gratitude.

HEOP Summer Challenge 2011 | Blog | Article Marketing Strategies …

Article Marketing is one of Internet Marketing?s fastest growing strategies to making money online. There are a wide variety of Article Marketing strategies available, but one being widely used today consists of using software. These programs are specifically designed to speed up and automate the process of Article Marketing. Here we will examine different Article Marketing strategies using these software programs.

It is a simple fact. The more you write articles, the more exposure your website or business receives, the more money you make. One problem though is that the process of writing articles for Article Marketing can be slow and cumbersome. The fastest way to make more money is to write as many articles as possible as fast as possible. Keep in mind that your articles must include quality content and be well written. Let us examine software that automates processes you can use as one of your article marketing strategies.

- Voice recognition software. Most people can talk easier than they can write. This is just a simple fact. So why not talk into a microphone and let the software write your articles? There has been voice recognition software in the past but most did not really work very well. As a matter of fact, this very article is being written with Dragon Naturally Speaking software. You talk into the microphone, which is connected to the computer and the software does the typing.

Like Dragon software, the newer voice recognition software available can be trained to recognize your speech pattern. This makes for fewer mistakes and the software gets better the more you use it. One of the nicest features is that you can type and talk using both techniques together as you write. Most people can talk at 120 words per minute but can only type about 40 words per minute. This type software speeds the typing process dramatically.

- Spinner software. Article spinning software has the ability to take articles that you have previously written and spin them into tens or hundreds of new articles. It accomplishes this by using a library of preconfigured words through a built-in thesaurus. Although this sounds like software sent from heaven, it does have its drawbacks.

It is true the software can spin an article or an accumulation of articles into new ones, but most of the time they become unreadable. The articles are cumbersome and hard to read unless you re-edit them quite a bit. I personally do not use article spinners, but there are very successful Internet Marketers who do have success with them. I do not suggest this type of software for beginning Article Marketers as it can lead to article rejections.

- Article submission software. Using article submission software can be one of your most time saving Article Marketing strategies. The software is usually straightforward and easy to use. It consists of filling in the blanks. Enter your article title, summary, body, resource box, keywords and press the button. Boom, the software automatically submits your article to the top article directories it is designed to do. It automatically logs into your account on each directory and submits your article.

This can be a real timesaver, as logging in to each account one at a time and entering in all of the information can be very time consuming. Once your account information for each directory is entered into the software, it saves the info, so you only have to do it once. After that, the process only consists of entering the article information and pressing the button! It cannot get much easier than that.

This is just a few of the article marketing strategies used today to speed up the process and proficiency. Want to know more about Article Marketing software??

French police launch assault on besieged gunman

TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) – French police launched an assault late on Wednesday on an apartment where a gunman suspected of killing seven people in the name of al Qaeda was holed up, officials said.

Three loud blasts were heard at the site in the southwest city of Toulouse just before midnight, which blew open the door of the apartment where the gunman had been holed up since 3 a.m. (10.00 p.m. EDT), a police source said.

“I confirm that the assault has started,” a police source told Reuters. The deputy mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Pierre Havrin, confirmed that negotiations had ended and the assault had begun.

Police had been trying to get 24-year-old Mohamed Merah to turn himself over after he fired through the door at them while they tried to storm his apartment in the suburbs of Toulouse in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 24-year-old Muslim shooter has been bottled up by France’s elite RAID commandos since 3 a.m. (10.00 p.m. EDT) inside a five-storey building in a suburb of Toulouse – a drama that has gripped France a few weeks ahead of a close-fought presidential election.

Police reinforcements had arrived at the scene at around 10 p.m. (5.00 p.m. EDT) and authorities switched off street lights in the street, signaling that action would begin soon.

“This will not last for days, because of physical and mental fatigue. All the experience with crazed gunmen like this is that they stop at some point,” Defence Minister Gerard Longuet said on TF1 television on Wednesday.

“What we want is to capture him alive, so that we can bring him to justice, know his motivations and hopefully find out who were his accomplices, if there were any,” he added.

Thomas Withington at the London Centre for Defence Studies said an elite commando team could launch an assault after throwing a stun grenade into the house.

“What complicates things is that they want to take him alive. They want to wait until he gets very tired,” he said.

Merah, who has told police negotiators he was trained by al Qaeda in the lawless border area of Pakistan, said he killed three French soldiers last week and four people at a Jewish school in Toulouse on Monday to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and because of French army involvement in Afghanistan.

A French citizen of Algerian origin, Merah boasted to police negotiators he had brought France to its knees and said his only regret was not having been able to carry out his plans for more killings.

“He has no regrets, except not having more time to kill more people and he boasts that he has brought France to its knees,” Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins, part of the anti-terrorist unit leading the investigation, told a news conference.

Merah had already identified another soldier and two police officers he wished to kill, Molins said.

“He has explained that he is not suicidal, that he does not have the soul of a martyr and that he prefers to kill but to stay alive himself,” the prosecutor said, adding that Merah had repeated promises to surrender to police.

CALL FOR UNITY

Earlier, at a ceremony in an army barracks in Montauban, near Toulouse, President Nicolas Sarkozy paid tribute to the three soldiers of North African origin killed last week. A fourth soldier of Caribbean origin is in a coma.

“Our soldiers have not died in the way for which they had prepared themselves. This was not a death on the battlefield but a terrorist execution,” he said, standing before three coffins draped in the French flag.

“This man wanted to bring the Republic to its knees. The republic did not give in, the republic did not back down, the republic has not weakened. The republic has done its duty, and tomorrow justice will be done,” said Sarkozy, who is running for re-election in five weeks time.

U.S. President Barack Obama spoke by phone with Sarkozy to voice his solidarity with the government and people of France.

Several other presidential candidates also attended the ceremony, including Socialist Francois Hollande, who is ahead of Sarkozy in voting intention polls.

Sarkozy’s appeal for unity came after far-right leader Marine Le Pen, a rival presidential candidate, said France should pursue war on Islamic fundamentalism.

But leaders of the Jewish and Muslim communities said the gunman was a lone extremist and called for calm and unity.

Sarkozy’s handling of the crisis could be a decisive factor in determining how the French people vote in the two-round presidential elections in April and May.

Immigration and Islam have been major campaign themes after Sarkozy tried to win over the voters of Le Pen, who accused the government of underestimating the threat from fundamentalism.

France’s military presence in Afghanistan has divided the two main candidates in the election. Hollande has said he will pull them out by the end of this year while Sarkozy aims for the end of 2013.

SURVEILLANCE

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said Merah was a member of an ideological Islamic group in France but this organization was not involved in plotting any violence.

He said Merah had thrown a Colt 45 pistol of the kind used in all the shootings out of a window of the block of flats, where he has been living, in exchange for a mobile phone.

Two police officers were injured in a firefight with the gunman after police swooped at 3 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Wednesday. Officials said police had also arrested Merah’s girlfriend and his brother, known to authorities as a radical Islamist.

The raid came just three days after the school attack and followed an unprecedented manhunt by French security forces.

Merah’s first attack, on March 11, was on a soldier he had contacted on the pretext of wanting to buy his motorcycle.

Gueant said police identified the IP address he used because he was already under surveillance for radical Islamist beliefs.

“We knew, and that is why he was under surveillance, that he had travelled to Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the minister said.

After Merah’s attack on the Jewish school, police received a tipoff from a scooter repair shop in Toulouse where the gunman asked how to remove a GPS tracker device.

Merah’s telephone was tapped from Monday and with the help of other information the police decided to raid his house.

A group of young men from Merah’s neighborhood described him as a polite man of slight build who liked football and motorbikes and did not seem particularly religious.

“He isn’t the big bearded guy that you can imagine – you know the cliche,” said Kamal, who declined to give his family name. “When you know a person well you just can’t believe they could have done something like this.”

Merah’s lawyer Christian Etelin, who has defended him in several minor crimes, said that his client had a tendency towards violence that had worsened after a stay in prison and trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“There was his religious engagement, an increasing hatred against the values of a democratic society and a desire to impose what he believes is truth,” Etelin told France 2 television, adding he had not expected this level of violence.

The Jewish victims from the Ozar Hatorah school were buried in Jerusalem on Wednesday. Parliament speaker Reuben Rivlin said in his eulogy at the hill-top cemetery that the attack was inspired by “wild animals with hatred in their hearts”.

Rival SI Models: Hating on Kate Upton?

Some jealous, rival models apparently have the claws out already for newly-minted Sports Illustrated stunner Kate Upton. Yeah, everybody’s a critic!

There was a frosty atmosphere during a launch event last month in front of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for this year’s issue, according to Fox News.

When 18 SI models lined up for a photo, cover model Kate Upton, standing on one side, was asked to move to the middle of the crew by a producer.

Kate Upton Photo

At first she was hesitant, but moved after further prompting. You know where this is going. Some of the ladies were not pleased at making space.

One model rolled her eyes; Another mumbled under her breath.

When Upton asked what the model said, the model reportedly snapped back, “Don’t worry about me, honey, cause I’m not worrying about you!”

Ohhhhhh.

An SI rep said only, “If there were words exchanged, it’s news to me. Kate was elegant and a complete force of spirit throughout the launch.”

Steelers WR Hines Ward retiring

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Hines Ward believes he can still play football. The longtime Pittsburgh wide receiver known for his high-wattage smile and his bone-crunching blocks just couldn’t stomach the thought of doing it in some strange uniform on some strange field with nary a Terrible Towel in sight.

“I just wouldn’t feel right,” Ward said.

So rather than play for a 15th season ? and his first outside the Steel City ? a tearful Ward opted to retire on Tuesday and secure a legacy unmatched in the franchise’s long history.

“I can say I’m a Steeler for life and that’s the bottom line, that’s all I’ve really ever wanted,” Ward said.

Ward holds every significant franchise receiving record, including receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. His 1,000 career catches rank eighth all time and he is one of two players with at least 1,000 receptions and two Super Bowl rings.

The decision comes three weeks after the 36-year-old was released by the Steelers in a salary cap maneuver. Ward says he was contacted by several clubs but never had any formal discussions. He insists there are no hard feelings for his release, understanding that football is a business. As if to prove the point, Ward embraced Steelers owner Art Rooney II after stepping away from the podium following the announcement.

“Thank you (Mr. Rooney) for giving a small town boy from Forest Park, Ga., a chance,” Ward said.

The former third-round pick out of Georgia was due to make $4 million next season, an expensive option for a player whose role diminished significantly in 2011 when he finished with 46 receptions, the fewest since his rookie season in 1998. He embraced his role as mentor to Pro Bowlers Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown even though he knew they were chewing into his playing time.

“I know the wideouts are going to be in great hands,” he said. “They’re full of talent.”

And they’re part of an offense that didn’t exist when Ward made his debut 14 years ago. He spent most of his first three seasons blocking for running back Jerome Bettis, something he did better than any receiver in the league.

Over time, the Steelers evolved from the grind-it-out attack that has been the club’s identity for decades. Ward’s breakout season came in 2001 when he set a franchise record with 94 receptions then obliterated that mark in 2002 when he finished with 112 catches.

He made four straight Pro Bowls from 2001-2004 and seemed to get better as he aged. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2006 Super Bowl after catching five passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in Pittsburgh’s 21-10 victory over Seattle, the franchise’s first championship in 26 years. The Steelers added a second title in 2009 to give them six, more than any other team in the league.

Ward hoped to get the Steelers their seventh Lombardi Trophy but didn’t catch a pass in a 29-23 overtime loss to Denver in the wild card round of last year’s playoffs. Only one pass came his way, a dart down the sideline by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during Pittsburgh’s final drive in regulation. Denver cornerback Champ Bailey swatted the ball to the ground and Ward walked off the field and into the unknown.

The former “Dancing With the Stars” champion could have a lucrative postseason career in front of a camera ? he worked the red carpet during the Oscars ? but he maintained after his release he could still contribute. He still does.

“I feel like I have a few more good years in me left, Ward said. “I would love nothing more to get back to the Super Bowl.”

He wasn’t willing to do it, however, outside Pittsburgh.

“I want to go down as one of the greats to wear the black-and-gold and that’s how it should end,” Ward said.

Ward laughed when asked if he could go into coaching one day, taking a jab at coach Mike Tomlin, who isn’t sure how Ward’s passion would play in the locker room. One of the most respected players in the league because of his contributions on and off the field, Ward leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.

“On behalf of the NFL players, I want congratulate Hines on an extraordinary career,” NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said. “I know he will continue to be a leader and example to our men.”

Ward’s already started by urging Wallace to do what he can to remain with the Steelers.

“I told Mike you may get a chance to go other places but there’s not another place like Pittsburgh,” Ward said.

Certainly not for Ward. His No. 86 jersey has long been one of the team’s top sellers, and his blue-collar attitude rang true to a fan base where hard work is a way of life. Ward understands the unique relationship the Steelers have with the city and to tarnish it by making a last-gasp attempt to pad his career stats didn’t interest him.

“I want my legacy here to say, you know what he was one hell of a football player who gave it his all,” Ward said. “I’m truly blessed. I played in three Super Bowls, won two Super Bowls, was Super Bowl MVP … what more could a player want out of his entire football career?”

Jolicloud Me opens in beta, brings together shares in the cloud

For as small as Jolicloud is, the company sure knows how to hang around. After renaming its cloud-based desktop operating system to Joli OS (and subsequently open-sourcing the thing), the outfit is taking a somewhat different approach with its latest offering. Jolicloud Me is a new type of cloud organizer — think of it as a mashup between Pinterest and Dropbox, among other things. It’s a high-level aggregation tool that pulls together cloud-based information and shares; things like music, images and video — regardless of where they came from — are grouped together. We’ve certainly seen social sharing aggregators before, but there’s a certain level of elegance to this one. Beta invites are going out today (see the source link), with platform support for Android, iOS and the world wide web via HTML5. Something tells us we’re just a few months out from yet another service that aggregates the aggregators.
